Minimum and Maximum Pipe Grades

How grade is set between self-cleansing and velocity limits.

Code / authority requirementMinimum grades are a code and authority requirement; maximums follow velocity limits.

The longitudinal grade of a sewer controls both its capacity and its ability to stay clear. Grades are set between a minimum that maintains self-cleansing at low flow and a maximum beyond which velocity causes scour, abrasion or difficult drops.

Minimum grade rules in the codes are a convenient proxy for self-cleansing. They are normally tabulated against pipe diameter, so verify the adopted table before fixing invert levels, and check whether the authority permits a flatter grade with supporting justification.

Key design considerations

  • Minimum grade for the diameter from the code and authority supplement.
  • Flatter grades may be considered with a justification such as a flushing or maintenance regime, but only with authority agreement.
  • Maximum grade is limited by velocity, abrasion at changes of direction, and the need for an energy-dissipating drop.
  • Grades must be constructible: very flat grades are sensitive to construction tolerance and settlement.
  • Carry the grade consistently through maintenance holes so the benching matches the pipe invert.
  • Confirm the achieved grade from as-constructed survey, not from design levels.

Equations

S = ΔIL / L

S is grade in m/m, ΔIL the fall in invert level over pipe length L. Express as a percentage (100 S) or as 1 in (1/S).

Design checks

  • Computed grade compared with the adopted minimum for the diameter.
  • Velocity at design flow and at the low-flow condition.
  • Drop or energy dissipation required at high inlet falls.

Standards and authority references

  • WSA 02 Gravity Sewerage Code of Australia (current edition), Water Services Association of Australia
  • Authority supplement, grade tables
  • Authority standard drawings

Confirm the current edition, amendment and any local supplement before applying any of the above.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Minimum grade tables are not reproduced here.
  • A compliant grade does not by itself guarantee self-cleansing at all flow conditions.
