Local Water Authority Requirements

Supplements, standard drawings and asset standards that modify the code.

Code / authority requirementAuthority documents carry the same or greater weight than the base code.

Each water authority publishes supplements, standard drawings, material specifications and developer requirements that adapt WSA 02 to local conditions and asset standards. These documents can change minimum grades, cover, permitted materials, maintenance hole details and acceptance testing.

A design that satisfies WSA 02 but ignores the local supplement is not compliant. Where documents conflict, obtain written direction from the authority rather than choosing an interpretation.

Key design considerations

  • Collect every current document: supplement, standard drawings, material and construction specifications, developer and connection requirements.
  • Record revision dates and check for updates at each design stage.
  • Confirm whether the receiving catchment has capacity, and what approval or trade waste conditions apply.
  • Note hold points and inspection requirements, since they influence documentation and program.
  • Prefer authority standard details over project-specific details unless there is a reason to depart.

Design checks

  • Current revisions listed in the design report.
  • Catchment capacity and connection approval confirmed.
  • Standard details adopted and referenced on drawings.

Standards and authority references

  • WSA 02 Gravity Sewerage Code of Australia (current edition), Water Services Association of Australia
  • The authority supplement and technical requirements
  • The authority's standard drawing set

Confirm the current edition, amendment and any local supplement before applying any of the above.

Limitations and assumptions

  • Requirements differ by authority and are revised frequently.
  • This library does not reproduce authority documents.

This reference is general engineering information. Confirm requirements against WSA 02, the current Australian Standards and the local water authority's supplement before use in design, and obtain project-specific advice for the conditions at hand.
