Minimum Cover Requirements
Cover to the pipe crown, and what drives the minimum.
Cover is the depth of material between the pipe crown and the finished surface. It protects the pipe from traffic and construction loads, keeps it within a stable zone of soil, and allows property connections and future surface works.
Minimum cover is a design requirement set by the code and the authority, usually graded by surface type and loading. It is not a preference, and a shallow pipe needs a designed solution, not a note.
Key design considerations
- Distinguish trafficable, non-trafficable and landscaped surfaces, and design for the worst case the surface may become.
- Allow for future road reconstruction, verge works and changed surface levels.
- Shallow cover may require a reinforced slab, concrete encasement, or a heavier pipe class.
- Deep cover increases soil load and construction cost; check both the pipe and the trench support.
- Check cover at every node and at each service crossing, not just at mid-reach.
Equations
cover = GL − (IL + Dₒ)
GL ground level, IL invert level, Dₒ pipe outside diameter. Crown level = IL + Dₒ.
Design checks
- Cover at every chainage against the adopted minimum for the surface type.
- Structural adequacy at the shallowest section.
- Cover re-checked against final surface levels.
