Backfill Requirements
Backfill zones, material selection and settlement control.
Backfill restores the surface and provides lateral support to the embedment. It is usually divided into zones: bedding, embedment around the pipe, and general backfill above the embedment.
Material and compaction requirements come from the authority and, under trafficked surfaces, from the road owner. Settlement beneath a finished surface is the most common visible failure and is usually an installation issue.
Key design considerations
- Zone boundaries and the material permitted in each.
- Compaction requirement under trafficked surfaces, and the testing that proves it.
- Select versus ordinary fill, and the treatment of unsuitable or reactive material.
- Swelling, collapsing or dispersive soils identified in the geotechnical report.
- Marker tape or detectable strip above the pipe where required.
- Make-up of the surface: pavement, subbase, topsoil, and reinstatement responsibility.
- Volumes: bank versus loose, and bulking for haulage.
Design checks
- Backfill zones and materials shown on the typical section.
- Compaction requirement and testing frequency nominated.
- Reinstatement responsibility agreed with the surface owner.

Limitations and assumptions
- Backfill volume estimates in this app are theoretical in-situ volumes and exclude bulking, loss and wastage.
